Tucked into the rolling Istrian Hills, Padna is more than just a stop on an itinerary. It’s a place where tradition lives, where hospitality is a way of life, and where the scent of herbs and slow-cooked sauces floats through the narrow village streets. For the team at Atlas Express, Padna holds a special place. We’ve been bringing guests here for more than 15 years, and each time we arrive, the locals greet us with the same warmth and excitement as if it were the very first time.

This enduring partnership with the village is built on shared values, respect for the land, appreciation for simplicity, and a love for the kind of hospitality that comes from the heart. It’s not just about sightseeing; it’s about slowing down and truly experiencing the rhythm of local life.
The flavours of Padna change with the seasons. In spring, you might find dishes with wild asparagus or tender chard lasagna, while summer brings an abundance of juicy tomatoes and fresh fruit. Autumn welcomes mushrooms and robust olive oils, while winter offers hearty, comforting fare that warms the soul. On any visit, you’re likely to taste fruit tarts made with figs or plums, truffle spreads on fresh-baked bread, handmade fuži with local truffles, pršut cured in mountain air, artisanal cheeses, and the unmistakable aroma of elderflower lemonade. Not to forget the wines—local, vibrant, and poured with pride.
What makes Padna truly special is that everything you taste has a story. These are not mass-produced products. These are family recipes, ingredients grown on nearby slopes, and dishes served with a sense of place. Guests don’t just taste Istria here, they feel it. There are no formalities, no rushed meals. Instead, there’s time to sit under a tree with a glass of wine, to chat with a farmer about their harvest, or to learn how a family recipe has been passed down through generations.

This past weekend, Padna hosted its beloved Olive Oil and Chard Feast, an event that brings the entire village to life. From house to house, visitors tasted regional specialties, admired traditional arts and crafts, and joined in lively Istrian music. It’s one of those rare events that feels entirely genuine. Because it is.
The day kicked off with a community boccia tournament, followed by a morning mass at the Church of St. Blaž. Throughout the village, locals opened their doors and offered samples of olive oil, fresh produce, and homemade delicacies. Children participated in workshops using recycled materials, while art lovers enjoyed exhibitions and films that told the story of Padna’s rich cultural history.
Live music from Mužika Sv. Lazar and Edi Roj Trio floated through the streets in the afternoon, creating an atmosphere of celebration. And as evening arrived, cultural performances and heartfelt speeches brought the community together once again, reminding everyone, locals and guests alike, why Padna holds such a special place in the region’s identity.
For Atlas Express, creating meaningful experiences is not about ticking boxes. It’s about honouring places like Padna that still embody true connection. It’s about curating journeys that bring value not just to the traveler, but to the communities we visit.
By including Padna in our cruise programmes and land excursions, we are not only introducing our guests to traditional Istrian life, we are supporting a sustainable model of tourism. One that uplifts local economies, preserves cultural heritage, and ensures that the benefits of travel are shared widely and fairly.
We take great care in working with local partners who share our values. Farmers with certified organic practices, artisans committed to preserving traditional methods, and hosts who genuinely enjoy welcoming guests. These are the people who make Padna what it is.
What makes our experiences in Padna stand out is the attention to detail. It’s not just about where we go, it’s about how we go. Guests aren’t rushed from one site to the next. Instead, we design each visit to allow time for conversation, exploration, and spontaneous moments. Whether it’s an impromptu olive oil tasting in someone’s backyard or a quiet moment inside the church, it’s these unplanned, unscripted encounters that leave the deepest impressions.
Even after all these years, there’s something about Padna that still surprises us. Maybe it’s the way the light hits the olive trees in late afternoon, or the pride in a farmer’s voice when they talk about their land. Maybe it’s the laughter that echoes down cobbled streets or the stillness of the hills surrounding the village. Whatever it is, we keep coming back. And so do our guests.
As we look toward future seasons, we know Padna will continue to play an important role in our programming. We are already working with local partners to explore new ideas, including seasonal workshops, immersive tastings, and more ways to bring guests even closer to the culture and rhythm of this special place.
Because at the end of the day, Padna isn’t just a destination on a map. It’s a reminder of what travel can be when it’s done with care: personal, grounded, and full of flavour.
